For the past year, Thryv has analyzed more than 58,000 small businesses across America. Our goal was to better understand how small businesses were presenting themselves online. We also wanted to discover how they could improve important metrics, such as search results and customer sentiment.
With their permission, we ran these businesses through a scan that captured key information focused on three main categories:
-
- Reputation, based on online reviews from customers and star ratings
- Presence, that captures accuracy of business listings across the internet, as well as website performance
- Outreach, which scores social media presence and activity
What jumped out at us right away was first, how low Reputation scores were in general. Second, how drastically those scores took a nosedive during the early months of COVID-19. Many of the industries wavered and some have recovered a bit.

We’ve captured all of these findings in our new exclusive report: Did Small Business Lose Its Good Reputation?
In this interactive report, you can discover how 16 different industries’ online reputation scores varied since January. For instance, Accommodations & Food Services has the highest all-time reputation score (57 out of 100), however, in April and June, its scores dipped more than 14% below its January baseline. Since then, however, it has steadily bounced back and now scores more than 24% higher than the January score.
Conversely, other industries, such as Arts & Entertainment, took a faster, deeper and more sustained dip, scoring more than 33% lower than January’s numbers, and finally began to recover in August.
In our report, you’ll be able to use the interactive industries table to discover how others fared, such as construction, healthcare, manufacturing and more.
